Voting Question: Can you put a larger sd card in a phone than the specs say you can?

I bought this lg neon phone and it says that you can put up to a 4g micro sd card in it, but i really want to put up to a 8g or 16g, if I can can that i wont buy a mp3 player, if you know than your gonna save me some cash,which i really apreciate.
