Open Question: Do the iPod earphones with the remote work with other mp3s?

A few days ago I broke my mp3 players volume.. It will go down but not up.. So i was thinking that today I would buy the iPod headphone since it has the remote thingy that controls volume.. Before I buy it though I want to know if it's worth buying for that specific reason or should I get another one (please specify).. Btw I have a Walkman..
